I work a lot with entrepreneurial women, leaders in their community, leaders in their companies, and very busy professional women. A common topic that comes up and what we’re going to talk about today is: How do I do self-care?
I have another video about the differences between self-care and fun. It’s a good video, go and watch that one. How do you do self-care when you are working sometimes twelve 14-hour days? It is really difficult. So I just want to acknowledge that this is not an easy task. Everybody makes it out to be. We’re going to talk more than just like talking about breathing. Breathing is not going to fix all your problems. It’s going to help, yes. It feels great taking some deep breaths but that’s not going to fix everything.
What I recommend often to women who are really successful working in companies is to have some space in your office, if at all possible, where you can do like 10-minute chunks of self-care. 10 minutes of you actually turn everything off, close your blinds to the office, and meditate for 10 minutes. Can you do that? Could you have a yoga mat in your office where you’re just stretching literally for 5 or 10 minutes? That’s all because you know you’re going to be there for 12 hours that day, eight to eight or ten.
Can you take 10-minute chunks where you make yourself do some of that? It’s not fun but does it keep your body mobile? Yeah! Does it reduce some of that tension in your neck and shoulders so you don’t end up with a headache? Yeah, it does. So it’s that kind of self-care, Can you take a walk on your lunch break that’s just literally a 10 or 15-minute walk or can you say I’m taking a smoking break (even if you don’t smoke) meaning you go outside of the building and you walk around just a little bit, you get some fresh air and then you come back up. You run and get some coffee outside you’re building and then you come back so that you get a little bit of break. You get a little bit of breathing room, you get to just see the sun for a little bit.
That’s the type of self-care that I’m talking about for really busy, very successful women. Obviously, if you can get in a massage running on the weekend or some other time during the week, that’s going to be good for you but you can’t always do that. You really don’t have the time.
So that’s my self-care tip for today.
