Why I Moved

I’ve gotten a couple of emails asking why I moved from South Florida to North Florida – Jacksonville to be exact.

I know I appreciate when the people I subscribe to share what’s going on in their lives.

So here ya go . . .

When I got divorced my kids were 2.5 and 6 years old. My ex-husband and I had agreed to live near each other until our kids were out of high school.

There were a few times I tried to convince him to move. But he refused to move even an hour or so north of where we were.

My youngest graduated from high school May of 2024 and went to college in August of 2024. So I was free – it was time to make the move,

But more than that

South Florida / Broward county’s summer population was usually around 1 million and went to 3 million in the winter. But during the pandemic, its resident year round population went to 2 million and the winter population went closer to 4 million. This made for a lot of traffic, literally doubling the time it took to get somewhere.

Insurance prices are going up and up and up.

And then the flooding . . . flooding is far worse in my area than it was 10 years ago without a solution.

My city mayor actually sent out a newsletter saying they have no way to fix the flooding so the city purchased some Hummer type vehicles in order to rescue people to safety. I would sometimes have to cancel sessions at my practice due to the flooding outside of my office for fear of us getting trapped there.

And the heat.

It’s so hot in South Florida, all the time. I’ve become more and more heat intolerant. I don’t know if that’s age, menopause, or my thyroid. But I am quite enjoying the cooler weather in Jacksonville!

Why Jacksonville?

I wanted to be near the ocean. And the kids.

I have traveled around the world in my life, but I don’t like flying much anymore. I wanted to be able to drive to see my oldest in Asheville, NC. It’s 7 hours from Jacksonville which is a manageable drive for me.

My youngest is autistic and was attending college in Gainesville at the time. She was already struggling and Jacksonville is about 1.5 hours away from Gainesville. I thought I would support her better living closer. She later moved back home due to physical and mental health reasons. But by then the decision had been made.

And then the husband. His job could transfer to Jacksonville and he wanted to be in a bigger city than a smaller city. Me too.

I’m adjusting here, learning the city, and visiting all the independent coffee shops. There’s a lot of them! Who knew!

Right now my practice is all online but I just signed an agreement to be able to see people in person in Jacksonville. Yay! I’m looking forward to helping the Jacksonville community sleep better, be less anxious, and feel better.

That’s the story, folks.
