When’s the last time you took a Stroll?
Friday, October 10th, was World Mental Health Day. I just wanted to acknowledge it since mental health affects everything . . . Everything!
Someone who has never experienced anxiety, depression, or any other type of emotional distress often doesn’t realize that. They’ll say unhelpful stuff like, “Just try to feel better.” Or “Try to stay busy.”
Staying busy isn’t necessarily bad but if you wake up thinking, “Just another miserable day,” it’s hard to think of things to keep you busy. And even harder to do them.
We know that talk therapy helps, all kinds. As does hypnosis. There have been times in my life when I felt like I was just making it from one therapy appointment to the next. And listening to hypnosis downloads in between.
Doing a self-help workbook can help too. See if you can find a friend to do it with you or your partner. One of my friends and I are doing this one right now now and it’s pretty good > https://a.co/d/h3VmQ6z
Exercise in the form of “strolling” can help. Higher intensity exercise can help too but that often feels impossible if you have a lot of mental health issues going on. So think about taking a stroll instead.
Steve Jobs was famous for his strolls around his neighborhood. And Aristotle would spend hours strolling and thinking.
I had a foster dog for about a week recently and had forgotten how nice it is to just take a brief walk outside. Or just stand outside while they did their business. Even in the rain.
Another recommendation is to get out around people. When I was in Asheville, NC visiting my daughter, there were several days that she had work. I made it a morning activity to sit at a cafe and draw and do watercolors rather than languish in the hotel room.

(A few of my watercolor dogs in the Asheville cafes. One was definitely giving me the side eye!)
Even if you’re an introvert, doing some type of quiet activity around other people can be helpful. And if you’re an extrovert, it’s essential to get out and about!
I hope this was helpful to improve your mental health in some small and who knows – maybe bigger – ways. Reach out if you need to!
