Feel Better this Holiday Season
We’re often expected to feel so happy during the holiday season. But boy is it seeded with emotional land mines!
From expectations, to grief reactions, memories of the past that are difficult, or longing for things to be different than they are.
One small action you can try to help yourself feel better is:
- Soften your gaze. Either look down slightly or choose something pleasant to look at.
- Take a gentle breath.
- Say to yourself, “I’m ok, right now, in this moment.”
- If tears start flowing in step 3, let them flow. If happiness comes in, allow it. If something else comes up (anger? anxiety? shame?), acknowledge it.
- If you like, make the noise of the feeling. This is most likely done if you’re doing this exercise alone. Scaring children, partners, and dogs is not recommended. The sound may surprise you but just let move through you until it feels complete.
- Again say, “I’m ok, right now, in this moment. This moment is safe. I am safe.”
- Notice if anything shifts in your body, mind, or heart for a few breaths.
Above all else, be compassionate towards yourself. I don’t say that lightly. I don’t say that because everyone seems to be saying it right now.
Recently, I said to my own therapist that maybe the one who kicks my ass should be listened to more than the compassionate self.
She disagreed and once again encouraged compassion.
Choose the one who feels better to you because both of them are trying to keep you safe.
And go back to “I’m ok, right now, in this moment.”
Or
“I’ll be ok. This moment won’t last forever. It will pass.”
