Shake, Shake, Shake it Out

Last newsletter we talked a simple technique to feel better –  softening your gaze and doing some in the moment mindfulness around feeling safe. If you missed it, it’s Here.

Here’s another small action you can try to help yourself feel better – Somatic Shaking. This, like the sound of a feeling, is best done in private so you don’t scare any people or any pets.

Somatic Shaking doesn’t have to look any certain way. It’s not dancing. It’s movement. You can do it lying down, sitting, or standing. Whatever feels best for you.

You just start to shake the body. Start wherever you like – with the hands or feet or head. Bounce up and down on your heels if you can, if it’s safe for you. You can jump or slide or roll around.

Just let your body shake.

It’s a way to help reset your nervous system and can honestly just feel good to let things out this way.

If you like, you can just shake some. If you like, you can shake out the feeling of something.

Afterwards, when the shaking feels complete, just close your eyes for a moment. You may even want to put your hand on your heart or on your belly and just feel your breath for 3-5 breaths, maybe less, maybe more.

And go back to “I’m ok, right now, in this moment.”
