Hey, Dr. Lit here doing another mini episode for you guys about the difference between self-hypnosis and hypnosis. This is a question I often get. What is the difference? And most people will tell you nothing. It is all self-hypnosis. Even when I’m guiding you, it’s self-hypnosis. So that’s the easy answer. There’s a little bit longer one, because sometimes I will talk to someone who’s like I cannot do it myself. I have tried and I just can’t get there. When it’s just me, I really do have to have someone guide me into hypnosis. So I understand that.

Is that technically self-hypnosis? Well, yes, I’m guiding you onto what to do and how to, let’s say, relax those muscles or get the way of relaxation, or invite your guides in or whatever it is that we’re doing. I’m there helping you do that. That’s sort of like saying do you always work out by yourself? If you have a trainer like no, the trainer’s there, right, the trainer’s there helping you. You wouldn’t say I’m going to the gym to work out alone. If you’re going to the gym to meet your trainer. Like no, you’re going to the gym, or to meet a friend like you’re not working out alone, you’re helping each other in that process. Are you literally moving your own body? Yes, you are. Are you doing that with some psychological assistance? Let’s say yes, when a trainer’s there or a friend is there and they’re counting for you and they’re like, okay, let’s do this one, let’s try this. Like that’s not technically self-working out, is it? (laughter) Sorry I find that so amusing out. I just never thought of it before that way. It really just came to me right now. You guys of like, is that self-working out? Not really so same with self-hypnosis.

Are you doing self-hypnosis when you’re in a session with me? Not really. I’m there, I’m helping you out, I’m walking you through the process. We’re coming up with the suggestions that you want to make changes in your life, and that’s a collaborative process.

Often people don’t know how to phrase that or they’ll phrase it very negatively, like I want to stop the food chatter. I talked about the food chatter in the previous mini episode. I want to stop the food chatter that’s going on. Food chatter is all that noise. Sometimes people call it food noise. That happens often for overeaters in between eating, like sometimes they’ll eat lunch and then the food chatter or food noise will start about an hour later about what they’re going to eat next, and so with hypnosis, we’re decreasing that or making it productive, like our body gives us these messages to help us know when to eat and what to eat to keep us alive. When they’re productive, they’re aligned with your goals of health, and when they’re not productive, they’re just sitting there, even when you’re not hungry, or telling you to eat stuff that’s not great for you, that kind of stuff. Anyway, when we’re doing that hypnosis (for weight loss), we’re developing phrases together about what you want your life to be like and changing that food noise in this example, from unproductive to productive.

Or let’s say, you want to stop smoking. We’re imagining what do you want to do instead? I cannot tell you the number of smokers I have helped to stop smoking, become non-smokers. When I ask them, well, what do you want to do instead of having that morning cigarette, they have no idea. They have never thought about it. They haven’t thought about replacement activities. Like you got to do something different. You’re not just going to like sit and stare. That’s a recipe for having another cigarette right, like, oh, so how can you keep your hands busy? Or what can you do? I had a friend who I helped stop, who was a knitter, and so she’s like, oh, it’d be great to just knit instead of smoke. It’s like, yep, that’s a good one.

Some people choose to play on their phone. That’s totally fine, but if playing on your phone is already associated with smoking, that’s not really the solution. We gotta find something else. Can you go for a walk? Can you pick up a grown-up coloring book? Can you pick up whittling? I don’t know. It’s all individual. So we’re coming up with what you want to be like, what you want your life like, and then crafting suggestions to do to put into the hypnosis. So that is collaborative. That’s not really self-hypnosis, is it?

When you’re listening to the file at home, you’re following along. I’m there with you in the recording. Well, technically it’s self-hypnosis, just like you’re going to do your exercises at home that the trainer assigned you to do. It’s a little bit different, though, unless the trainer is giving you recordings to follow along to. Never heard of that. But hey, it could happen.

Oh, actually I did a knee program that I loved. Fantastic. Jeff Neupert and his wife, who are both PTs, developed this joint pain program. Actually, I was having like 24-7 knee pain in my left knee. It took it down to zero. It has these videos which a lot of online programs do. I made my own little charts about what to do, how many reps, all this stuff and did my exercises at home. It took that knee pain to zero. It’s amazing. Highly recommend it. You can Google him up Still running the program today.

And so is that working out by myself? It is that would be self-working out, right Self-exercise? I don’t know, is the Peloton self-exercise? Because you have people there that are high-fiving you and all of that. It’s in between. I think that one’s in between. I don’t know what we’re going to call that, but that’s one reason Peloton is so successful is that you’re getting that group experience while you’re actually at home alone. Technically, I mean, kids may be around or partners or friends or whoever, but technically you’re exercising alone. But this group experience reinforces it so much.

My youngest went through the Mayo Clinic’s chronic pain program recently. They shared a study on the parent education it’s not just parents the support person education days which were Fridays when she was in the program, and the study was about people feeling better, having lower levels of depression, when they actually went to a gym with other people, regardless of whether they talk to the other people or not. Just the social aspect of it helped them feel better. That’s an interesting study to me, because I really don’t prefer the gym. There’s been many years in my life when I did go to the gym, but I don’t know. I probably haven’t been a member of a gym in like 10 years or something. But the Peloton is actually a social experience for me.

I like seeing who’s working out. I like seeing like, oh, this 80-year-old woman in Oregon can do this class and I can certainly finish it too. Okay, here in my 50s. It’s inspiring to me to see everyone working out. It keeps me going. So is that self-workout? I don’t know. We’re going to settle on the in-between here. So perhaps listening to it at home. You’re listening to the recording that I made for you. My voice is going. You’re drifting in and out. Perhaps that’s the in between too. Right, it’s not completely.

You’re just lying there and putting yourself into a trance, because you can learn that as a skill, absolutely. In fact, most people do it every night when they fall asleep. You know how to settle your body and float off to sleep. Very similar to putting yourself into a trance and then giving yourself suggestions. For my eyes they’ve had several surgeries I have to wear a heated eye mask in the mornings, 15 minutes a day, and so I use that as time to meditate, and often I’ll put on like meditative music and so I will give myself suggestions during that time. Sometimes,  I am meditating in terms of trying to just calm my brain down and clear my thoughts, but other times I’m giving myself suggestions for something that I want in my life, like I feel peace, I feel safe, I’m healing from a place of wholeness, suggestions like that.

So that would be self-hypnosis. Right there, there’s no one guiding me. I’m guiding myself. Versus when I go to an actual practitioner to help me, they are helping me. It’s not really self-hypnosis, that’s collaborative hypnosis. Let’s call it that Self-hypnosis versus collaborative hypnosis. I think that gets to the essence of it a lot better than saying self-hypnosis versus hypnosis. There you go. All right, people, I hope you are healthy and safe. If you want to do some of the in-between, there’s free downloads on my website. You can download a hypnosis and listen to me and know that you’re doing the in-between, okay, all right, I hope you’re healthy and safe Peace.
