Tips for Holiday Sanity

pexels-lina-1740900 tips for holiday sanity dr liThe holiday season is here! I’ve put together some tips for you if you really hate being at the parties and events.

These work great for HSP (Highly Sensitive People) and Autistic people too!

1. Don’t go. Really. Have a cozy evening at home and send all the calls from your narcissistic mother to VM.

2. Don’t sit next to people you hate (or don’t like). Try to avoid them or pawn them off to whoever is next to you. “I’m sure cousin Shawni would love to hear about your very boring trip.”

3. Disappear. To the bathroom. To the back yard. To the store to pick up something someone forgot or something extra of anything. To the bedroom or extra room. If you have a somewhat smaller child, to the playground!

4. Take your craft or take up a craft – quick! I discovered that hand quilting was like a relative repellant. People saw me as “busy doing something over there” so didn’t engage me as much. If you don’t have a craft, order an easy kit to start knitting and work your way through it at the holiday party.

5. Take your kindle or a paper book. Reading something won’t garner you nasty comments about being on your phone and is a direct signal that you’re occupied. If someone does talk to you, you can listen for awhile and at any point say you have to get back to your book.

6. Oh your PHONE! If you can stand the comments about “this generation,” be on your phone! It’s a way to zone out.

7. Show pictures of your vacation, cats, dogs, or kids if they’re not there. Not just one or two. Like 10, 20, take your time searching for them. Let out a loud, “Found it!” Nothing will bore people more than this and they’ll quickly say they have to do something “in the kitchen.”

8. Just fall asleep – anywhere. On the couch, a chair, maybe even a corner of the fireplace. You’re getting very sleepy  . . . very sleepy . . .

Hopefully some of these made you laugh!

Peace and health and Happy Holidays (seriously!),
