Hey, I’m Dr. Elizabeth Bonet with floridapsychotherapy.com. Today, I am going to talk a little bit about pain relief. Yesterday I twisted my ankle out walking the dog. I stepped off a curb into the grass somewhere and boom, I went down. First, you know I sat there and just breathed and made sure nothing was broken . . . and it wasn’t. It was just a twisted ankle.
Then I immediately thought to myself, “Okay, what did I just do?” I breathed, right? That’s what you do when you go into pain. You start breathing, your system goes into like, “Oh my God I need to breath! I need more oxygen!” There’s a scientific basis to that – send more oxygen through the blood, and healing starts immediately.
Eventually I got up, went home and put the foot up. I got some ice going and then I consciously breathed.
I went into what I often teach clients which is a 4-8 breath. It’s an inhale to 4 . . . So you inhale 2, 3, 4 and exhale 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. And you can do that
at your own pace.
Sometimes you need to do 1, 2, 3, 4, pause, exhale, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
Sometimes you can do it slower but really the key there is to just do it.
Self-hypnosis for Quicker Healing
Then I began to do some self-hypnosis in terms of letting the ankle heal, sending blood flow down there and sending blood flow up the leg as well so that all of that processes starts to work really well. To enhance that healing process so that hopefully I won’t have the sprained ankle for long, I won’t be in crutches for long and it will speed all that up.
Your mind does incredible things in terms of your body and being able to help it heal faster and quicker and there’s a ton of research on this. You can absolutely do what I call self-hypnosis to help that process along.
When I go into pain, I’ve used the 4-8 breath for years and years. I actually learned that breath . . . it’s an ‘ancient yoga breath’ . . . I actually learned that breath as part of HypnoBirthing class when I was pregnant with my 2nd child and she’s 10 now. I’ve used it all the time since them. For the dentist, gynecologist appointments, at the OB, or whenever I hurt myself.
It’s a meditative breath. Whenever I’m not in pain I use that breath so that my body knows it’s a relaxing breath and it’s learned that. I really suggest that for everyone. If you want to see more about that breath, you can read this blog post about breathing to sleep better and reduce anxiety.
I specialize in hypnosis, anxiety and helping adult children of toxic parents feel more stable. To see if we’re a good fit to work together in the Broward County and the Fort Lauderdale / South Florida area, schedule your free consultation at 954-309-9071.
