3 Tips for Goal Setting
I’ve been asked my entire adult life how I get so much done. It’s goal setting. There is no way I could get so much done without setting my goals each year (which I do on my birthday). Then each quarter (every 3 months), then each month, and each week. And, yes, sometimes I set a goal for the day!
Each year in January I share my best goal setting tips and strategies on the podcast.
This year I talk about what keeps people stuck and what helps them get un-stuck. I also share several different ways to set goals so that you can find the way that fits you.
Goals and goal setting doesn’t matter a whit though if you never get them done. Here are my Top 3 Tips to keep your level of motivation high to achieve your goals. These are very well researched over decades (not by me but by, like, “researchers” who do that kind of stuff).
Top 3 Tips
1. Write a clear and compelling goal or outcome you’re seeking. Make it simple and understandable. Keep it to one or two sentences. Mine are never more than one sentence and are often just 2-3 words.
2. Create a path or process that you believe will get you there. Write this out in small, simple steps. The smaller the better. This is where monthly, weekly, and daily goals come in if you’re shooting for something larger. Keep daily goals to small, simple steps.
3. Believe that you can execute and succeed. This is a big one! Often it’s easier to believe you can do the small, simple steps that lead to the bigger goal. That’s ok! Just believe along the way that you can succeed.
Don’t let your past or your past sense of identity hold you back. Our personalities change all the time over our life spans (as you’ll hear in the episode). One of the best things you can do to achieve your goals whether that’s in business, family, relationships, or health is to work on letting go of old beliefs, whether conscious or subconscious, that are holding you back.
