Is it a Happy Mother’s Day?

momcandyhearts-NPD-Mom-and-Dr-LizToday is Mother’s Day.

This morning I was sitting in my kitchen holding my purple coffee mug with MOM stamped on it. I bought myself this mug at some point because no one had bought it for me – not my kids, not the ex-husband, not the 2nd husband, and not my own mother.

And I love being a mom so wanted a symbol of this feeling.

But as a daughter of a narcissistic mother, Mother’s Day has always been let’s say . . . complex. So much so that I have a speciality area of working with adult children of Narcissistic parents / NPD parents.

And did an entire YouTube series on NPD moms – figuring out what type yours is, how to handle them, what to do about Mother’s day when you have an NPD mom.

It’s not easy. And it’s not easy to find a neutral Mother’s Day card either – one that doesn’t gush on and on about what a great mother they are. I used to search for hours to find one that JUST said, “Happy Mother’s Day.” Nothing more, nothing less.

It was only years after my mother died that I could feel true gratefulness for her. Before that, it was mostly trying to avoid her for years at a time. And after she died, a sense of relief.

That’s not something you hear a lot of people talk about when their parents die unless there’s a prolonged illness. But with NPD parents, there’s often a huge sense of relief that happens after they pass away.

They can no longer make unreasonable demands of you, stalk you, guilt you, put you down, criticize you  . . . all the things that narcissistic parents do.

If you have one, give yourself an emotional break this Mother’s Day. Know you’re not alone. And reach out if you would like some help handling your NPD parent.
