Hypnosis combines relaxation with a focused state of concentration. Until recently it was assumed that it was similar to sleep and that we were "unconscious" during hypnosis. In reality, it's a specific state that the brain enters into when it is receptive to suggestion which has been discovered on brain scans during hypnosis.

Most people just simply feel relaxed. Some people feel hear every word and feel very focused. Others feel like they drift in and out of listening. Some people fall asleep for the night (if listening to it at bedtime).
