Happy Pride!
June was Pride month and being the mom to two kids who identify as LGBTQIA+, I’m proud to be an ally both personally and professionally.
I’m not perfect though. I sometimes forget to use gender neutral pronouns or assume a heteronormative motivation. I try my best to quickly correct myself.
Last year I was occasionally popping out with the Dead Name of one of my daughter’s friends who I have known since they were about 8 years old (not an excuse!).
To help me out, Eva came up with something she knows I love – rewards and touch. Every time I said the Chosen Name, she would high five me. It worked! I can’t remember the last time I slipped up.
If you need to improve your Ally abilities, keep trying until you find a system that works for you.
If you want ideas about how to support a child or a friend’s child who is coming out, check out John Sovec, the author of “OUT: A Parent’s Guide to Supporting your LGBTQIA+ Kid through Coming Out and Beyond.”
